Destiny, with credit to Professor Nettifee brought the book True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership into my life and I want to bring it into the lives of others. More specifically those who may believe they weren’t born with the characteristics or traits to become a leader or those who have not found their passion or purpose in life; their â€Å"True North.† The book, written by Bill George and co-author Peter Sims, compiles a series of interviews with 125 managers from Howard Schultz of Starbuck’s to Dan Vasella of Novartis. The interviewees guide readers through their journey to become the leaders they are today; discussing their failures, successes, obstacles, personal tragedies and triumphs. The stories of each manager prove the True†¦show more content†¦They temporarily lose sight of what is really important by focusing on themselves; personal success vs. team success. They can get back on the path towards authentic leadership by realizing le adership is not about themselves, it is about empowering others. Transformation from â€Å"I† to â€Å"We† This transformation occurs in Phase II of the leadership development. This is when we realize that leadership is not about giving subordinates directions and orders to follow. It is about empowering people to grow to their fullest potentials. Part II: Discover Your Authentic Leadership Knowing your Authentic Self The book teaches the important of being self-aware in order to choose the right role for you, be comfortable in your own skin, act consistently in different situations, gain trust of others, build strong relationships, and to know your strengths and weaknesses. Without self-awareness, we would be easily thrown off our True North path. The book provides a method for finding your true self called â€Å"Peeling Back the Onion.† The process begins with looking at your outer layers such as body language, attire, appearance and leadership style and then goes deeper to strengths, weaknesses, motivations values and then to understanding your life story, vulnerabilities, etc and then finally to your authentic self.
